From the Driveway to the Docks: Protecting Your Car from Theft

Auto theft remains a serious issue in Ontario, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and despite recent progress, the problem is far from solved. In April 2025, the Ontario government introduced new legislation targeting car thieves by banning the possession of devices used to hack key fobs, a method behind thousands of vehicle thefts each year (1). The crackdown is part of a broader provincial strategy that includes over $50 million in funding for law enforcement, tools, and community support, all aimed at curbing a crime that has hit record highs in the past few years (2). While the number of thefts may have declined slightly in some areas, the reality is that professional thieves continue to adapt quickly. For drivers, that means the best defence is understanding how theft happens and how to prevent it.

Understanding the Methods Behind Modern Auto Theft

Today's car thieves are employing increasingly sophisticated techniques to bypass traditional security measures. One prevalent method is electronic interception, where thieves use devices to capture and replicate signals from key fobs, granting them unauthorized access to vehicles. (3)

Another common tactic is the relay attack. In this scenario, two devices work in tandem: one captures the signal from a key fob inside a home, while the other transmits it to the vehicle, tricking it into unlocking and starting. (3)

Additionally, some thieves exploit the Onboard Diagnostics Port (ODP) found in modern vehicles. By connecting specialized equipment, they can program new key fobs, effectively taking control of the car's systems. (3)

Vehicles Most Targeted by Thieves

Certain vehicles are more attractive to thieves due to their popularity, resale value, and perceived ease of theft. The Équité Association's 2023 report lists the following as the top stolen vehicles in Canada (4):

  1. Toyota Highlander (2021 model)

  2. Dodge Ram 1500 Series

  3. Lexus RX Series

  4. Honda CR-V

  5. Land Rover Range Rover

  6. Ford F-150 Series

  7. Jeep Grand Cherokee

  8. Jeep Wrangler

  9. Honda Civic

  10. Acura RDX

These models are often targeted due to their high demand in both domestic and international markets, as well as vulnerabilities like keyless ignition systems lacking robust anti-theft features. (4)(5)

Government and Law Enforcement Initiatives

In response to the escalating theft rates, Ontario has introduced measures to combat auto theft more effectively. One such initiative is the Provincial Carjacking Joint Task Force, which has already made over 100 arrests and recovered more than 500 vehicles. (6)

Additionally, authorities are cracking down on the possession of electronic devices used to intercept key fob signals. New legislation aims to make it illegal to possess such tools, thereby limiting thieves' access to the technology that facilitates these crimes. (3)(6)(7)

Practical Steps to Protect Your Vehicle

While governmental efforts are crucial, individual actions play a significant role in preventing auto theft. Here are some practical steps you can take:

  • Use Faraday Pouches: Store your key fobs in Faraday pouches or boxes to block their signals, preventing relay attacks. (3)(5)(6)(7)

  • Install GPS Trackers: The technology here is evolving fast, GPS tracker can monitor your vehicle's location in real-time, aiding in recovery if stolen. (8)(9)

  • Employ Physical Deterrents: Steering wheel locks and wheel clamps can act as visible deterrents to potential thieves.

  • Secure Parking: Park in well-lit, populated areas. If possible, use a garage or secure parking facility. (10)

  • Avoid Leaving Valuables: Never leave valuables or personal identification in your vehicle, as they can attract thieves and lead to identity theft. (10)

Conclusion

Auto theft across the GTA remains high, and while enforcement is improving, so are the tactics used by thieves. The good news is, there are steps every car owner can take to lower their risk. From using immobilizers and GPS trackers to making smarter choices around key fob storage and parking, a bit of planning goes a long way.
